I find myself recently curious about drones for a specific use, at first anyways. I would like to know the options those with experience might recommend for very moderate use. Basically, I would like to use a small drone to help identify the trail ahead in backcountry 4x4 excursions. When exploring new trails, I often find myself plugging through some sketchy, rutted areas only to find a dead end not too far ahead. I'm thinking, "If I had a drone to launch up and get a bird's eye view up to maybe 100 yards ahead or so, I might avoid some of the back tracking due to dead ends." I live and play in the mountains around southern Idaho so winds can sometimes be a factor. I would like to stay under 300 USD if possible. Any suggestions?

In general , sounds like a good idea. Check if there are any limitations where you are thinking of flying.

Some places don’t allow flying

And of course, weather permitting…

Haven’t check prices recently. Something that would let you see obvious hazards should be doable

For that use case, I’d prioritize portability, battery life, GPS stability, and wind handling more than camera specs.

Since you mainly want to look ahead on trails and avoid dead ends, a small used/refurbished DJI Mini-style drone would probably make more sense than building something custom. Just keep in mind that mountain wind can be rough on very small drones, so I’d stay conservative and avoid flying far beyond where you can clearly maintain orientation and line of sight.

Also check the local rules for the specific land you’re riding on, because parks, wilderness areas, and some public lands can have separate drone restrictions even if the airspace itself looks okay.
