The Alikes Salt lake is a vast wet land on the north coast of Kos between Tigaki and Marmari. It’s just over 10km from the islands capital Kos town and that’s around a 20 minute car journey. The salt lake is huge, in total it covers an area of around 800,000 m² and it’s just under 4km if you were to walk all the way round. The salt lake is home to a lot of wildlife including flamingos and other migratory birds. There’s also water snakes and of course, mosquitoes so don’t forget to apply insect repellent before visiting. Other items that you’ll probably need to take with you are sun lotion, a hat, water and some good shoes. The easiest way to reach the salt lake is from Tigaki, just head west from the beach and you’ll get there eventually. You do have to pass the nudist beach on this route though which isn’t to everyone’s tastes. Another option for visiting the salt lake is to head to the horse riding stables at the western end where you can join a trek that takes you round part of the lake and along the beach.
