Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA.
If you have not already done so, you will need to get your TRUST Certificate, It's a certification you will need to legally fly a drone or even your "old R/C planes…" . You can get that at the Pilot Institute Web Site (FREE…).

If the drone you buy weighs less than 250-grams (0.55 pounds), and while you are flying under The Exception for Recreational Flyers, you are not required to register your Drone.
If the drone weighs more than 250-grams (0.55 pounds), and even while you are flying under The Exception for Recreational Flyers, you are required to register your Drone. It is only costs $5.00 for every drone you might buy while you are flying just for fun…

My first drone was a $30 Amazon Drone with 3-batteries, a case, and controller. I only had to use an old smart phone to see the video, but it was lousy video… But it sure was fun to fly Not-first-Person. But there was no support.
You probably want a GPS enabled drone as a minimum, otherwise you would need to fly it just to hover, else the slightest breeze will blow it away…
I would advise you to read the postings in the various sub-forums below concerning the various models available, YouTube is also a great source of what is available.
If FPV is what really interests you then get a FPV drone, verses a regular Quadcopter, they require the use of goggles and Legally, you must have a person to accompany you to act as a visual observer to ensure your drone is not a danger to others…
You see, when you have the goggles on, you cannot see anything except what the drone is looking at and people could walk up right beside you and you would not even know it… hence the visual observer…
Like I said, check out YouTube and do not trust any single "review" you see on line as the poster might have received the drone Free and they would not want to post too damming a review…
Good Luck!
