I am following instructions in user's manual to calibrate compass. Every time I attempt to calibrate, I hold horizontally and rotate and rear lights turn solid purple. Then, when I hold vertical the front lights turn solid pink. BUT, when I place drone down, all lights flash and I lose calibration. Any idea, what I'm doing worng? Thanks for your help!

I'm not familiar with the 270 but on my 720 when the drone is on, paired and parked (ie: NOT airborne) I can pull both sticks to the back right and hold for a couple of seconds and the drone will drop back into calibration mode. I do this on occasion if my drone seems to be drifting too much when dead-stick.

I have a little HS 120D and mine does the same. I just leave it for a couple of minutes until it acquires the right number of satellites for GPS and then the lights show accurately for take-off procedure.
