Just got my first drone, a DJI Mini 4 Pro. (I actually had a Parrot AR 2 years ago, but never got into it.) I've been trying to get compliant with all the regs. <250g drone, so not registered. Have my TRUST cert. Have copies of CBO guidelines. I'm looking foward to learning to fly it for fun.

But, I've run into a question. I live a little over 2 miles from our local airport. My house is in class D airspace, according to Air Aware. My understanding is I *should* be able to apply for LAANC authorization to fly there, but Air Aware offers no such option. Does this mean I can't fly it in my backyard or am I missing a step somewhere?

Greetings from Birmingham Alabama USA: welcome to the forum! We look forward to hearing from you!

LAANC is "inactive" which means you would need to apply at FAA Drone Zone

. 1. Check the weather. 2. Click the yellow button and see what it says.3. Click the notify and fly and see what pops up.It will ask what AGL you plan. It might say you might not be able to fly so you put AGL in. I am in class D as well- but thus said I didn’t need laanc. So you have to check a but. One time I was given a 2 hour window to fly- it depends.

Thanks. Appreciate your responses. Submitted an application at DroneZone. We'll see.

From my reading I assumed that LAANC authorization would be largely automatic, and instantaneous. Any idea why that wouldn't be the case here? In the meantime, I guess I'll find uncontrolled airspace to fly in, lots of that around here, too.

Ok, searched for the info myself, duh! LAANC is not availabe at KTRK because "the FAA has not integrated the facility into its automated digital authorization system." Fair enough, still planning weeks ahead to for a backyard flight?

The airport website specifically asks you to call the tower: "Our air traffic controllers will be notified of your flight, however as a courtesy on the day of your flight please give our air traffic control tower a heads-up phone call before operating. Tower can be reached at 530-414-1641."

I read elsewhere, that you should NOT call ATC. Or maybe that's just for LAANC authorizations? This is so confusing!

If it gave you a phone number I would call it. If nothing else beginning learning especially in a space you will be in repeatedly.
