My Atom 2 has started to refuse to connect to the controller. By picking the drone up and turning it upside down, the controller gives an error message and sometimes will connect when the drone is set back down.
I think it's an interference with the gimble somehow. It is frustrating and it sometimes takes several minutes of starting, re-started and manipulations to make it hook up.

This is what my AI says-
Here’s why the orientation-dependent behavior points to IMU:

The Tell:

The fact that the drone behaves differently when upside down vs. right-side up is classic IMU behavior. The IMU constantly reports the drone’s orientation to the controller. If it’s uncalibrated or miscalibrated, bad orientation data can prevent proper connection handshake.

Secondary possibility:

Compass/magnetometer interference—also orientation-sensitive. If something metal shifted near the compass, certain angles could trigger interference.

Less likely (but possible):

A loose gimbal causing a shift in weight distribution or mechanical stress that intermittently affects internal connections or the IMU sensors themselves.

Try these fixes in order:

1. IMU Calibration (do this first—it’s the most common fix)

• Use the DJI Fly app → Settings → Advanced → IMU Calibration

• Find a flat, non-metallic surface (wooden table works well)

• Follow the app’s calibration steps

• Restart the drone after calibration

2. Compass Calibration

• DJI Fly app → Settings → Advanced → Compass Calibration

• Perform the figure-8 compass dance in an open area away from metal

3. Battery contacts

• Power off, remove the battery

• Gently clean the drone’s battery contacts with a dry cloth

• Reseat the battery firmly

4. Gimbal reset (if IMU/compass calibration doesn’t work)

• If the gimbal is mechanically loose or binding, it could be stressing internal connections

• Check for any visible movement or play in the gimbal

• Some drones have a gimbal calibration option in the app

5. Firmware check

• Ensure drone and controller firmware are fully updated

If IMU calibration doesn’t solve it, the gimbal or internal connections may actually be physically damaged. But start with IMU—that’s the 80% fix for this exact symptom.
